San Diego musicians are remembering Tim Lowman’s talent and kindness after the beloved performer was killed in a motorcycle crash near Balboa Park.
SAN DIEGO — San Diego’s music scene is grieving the loss of Tim Lowman, who died in a fatal motorcycle crash early Sunday morning near Balboa Park. The versatile musician, known for his performances as both a band member and one-man-band showman, was struck by an SUV on Pershing Drive at approximately 1:40 a.m.
According to the San Diego Police Department, a Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Lowman was hit by an SUV, whose driver remained at the scene. Police say the SUV driver is not suspected of DUI, and Lowman’s impairment is considered unknown.
Lowman was a member of the band Blackout Party and performed as a one-man band called Low Volts, where he played all the instruments himself. Timothy Joseph, a producer and co-host of the Loudspeaker Show on radio station 91X and a close friend of Lowman’s, recalls the musician’s distinctive performance style and the impression he made.
“I walked in and saw a guy standing on top of his drum kit playing a slide guitar I had never seen anything like it and we became fast friends after that,” said Timothy Joseph.
Joseph remembered Lowman not only for his musical abilities but for his character and generosity toward other musicians. “We were all impressed with his musical talent he’s a super great musician but just the way he treated everybody the way he encouraged everybody and supported everybody and his smile was always present,” said Timothy Joseph.
Lowman’s performances at The Casbah and other local music venues showcased his talents as a blues guitarist and multi-instrumentalist. “Play incredible guitar riffs played kick drum with his foot a great showman always dressed to the 9’s everybody wanted to be as cool as Tim,” said Timothy Joseph.
Joseph said he had recently been planning to collaborate with Lowman in the studio. “Like I said he was just in the studio not even a week ago and we were talking about making music together I’m gonna miss that cause we didn’t get an opportunity to do it,” said Timothy Joseph.
Lowman is survived by his wife and a 2½-year-old daughter. The couple was married by Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Joseph and Lowman’s brother-in-law are planning a celebration of life to honor his memory and legacy in the San Diego music community.
