Many war epics have become some of the most critically acclaimed and influential movies of all time, but few have had as much of an impact as Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan. This comes after the film was added to Tubi in April, with many re-watching or discovering the war drama now that they can stream Saving Private Ryan for free. The film was released on July 24, 1998, and completely redefined the genre.

Saving Private Ryan Inspired Many War Films to Come

Saving Private Ryan stars Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Jeremy Davies, Ted Danson, Bryan Cranston, Nathan Fillion, Vin Diesel, Adam Goldberg, and many more. The film was inspired by many real-life stories about World War II, especially by historian Stephen E. Ambrose’s books and the stories of real brothers who served together, such as the Sullivan brothers and the Niland brothers.

The story follows Captain John Miller, played by Hanks, as he leads a group of soldiers to locate and rescue Private James Francis Ryan, played by Matt Damon. This is after three of the four Ryan brothers are killed in action. Saving Private Ryan is mostly remembered for its accurate portrayal of war and battle scenes that influenced cinema.

Matt Shakman, who directed the Season 7 episode of Game of Thrones titled “The Spoils of War,” also cited Saving Private Ryan as one of his inspirations for the battle sequence.

The film has an impressive 94% Certified Fresh Tomatometer score based on critics’ reviews, and an even better 95% Popcornmeter score based on audiences’ reviews. On IMDb, Saving Private Ryan also has an incredible score, with the film holding an 8.6 rating with more than 1.6 million reviews.

Jay Boyar from the Orlando Sentinel said, “The cast functions as an effective and believable unit. And Hanks gives a strong, increasingly solemn performance as its mysterious leader.” Roger Ebert gave the film a 4/4 and highlighted another star, saying, “They are all strong presences, but for me the key performance in the movie is by Jeremy Davies(…).”

Many critics not only praised the performances but also Steven Spielberg’s direction, with many calling Saving Private Ryan his best film. Michael Rechtshaffen from The Hollywood Reporter said, “The visual masterwork finds Spielberg atop his craft, weaving heart-pounding action and gut-wrenching emotion that will leave viewers silently shaken… If words occasionally fail the picture, the images speak indelible volumes.”
