The Schubert Research Clinic (SRC) Biochemistry Laboratory plays a critical role in supporting investigators by delivering high-quality clinical and research assays that move science—and patient care—forward.
The Schubert Research Clinic (SRC) Biochemistry Laboratory is certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), the College of American Pathologists (CAP), and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards and is designed to efficiently serve the shared needs of investigators working with both human and animal samples. By combining advanced instrumentation with deep scientific expertise, the lab provides the services researchers need to execute complex clinical and translational studies. Seamless sample handling and rapid turnaround make the laboratory an essential partner for time-sensitive research.
Supporting Diverse Research Needs Across Disciplines
The SRC Biochemistry Laboratory offers a wide range of customizable services to meet the unique needs of each research project, including:
- General clinical chemistry
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Allergy and autoimmune diseases
The lab conducts testing on human and animal specimens, including blood, urine, serum, plasma, and saliva, using methodologies such as Chromatography, ELISA, Radioimmunoassay (RIA), and automated assays.
“Our lab is uniquely positioned to support both pediatric and adult clinical and translational research,” said Chris Larka, Research Assistant IV, “partnering with investigators at Cincinnati Children’s, the University of Cincinnati, and institutions across the nation.”
Advanced Technology Driving Innovation
To support cutting-edge research, the lab is equipped with a robust suite of advanced equipment, including:
- Beckman Coulter Chemistry DxC 500 AU
- Beckman Coulter Access2 Immunoassay Analyzer
- Waters Acquity H-Class Chromatography System
- Thermo Fisher Dionex Ultimate 3000 Chromatography
- Werner Bioflash Chemiluminescent Analyzer
- Thermo Fisher Scientific Phadia 250
- Dynex DS2 ELISA System
Expertise You Can Count On
The SRC Biochemistry Laboratory team is made up of highly trained professionals with extensive experience in both clinical and research environments. The team brings:
- Expertise in CAP accreditation and FDA compliance
- Experience in method validation and assay development
- Proficiency in chromatography, ELISA, and radioimmunoassay (RIA)
- Over 30 years of combined clinical experience and 25 years of combined research experience
This depth of knowledge ensures accuracy, consistency, and confidence in the team’s results. As a multidisciplinary research center—bringing together nurses, dietitians, and research scientists—the SRC can support the entire research process, from planning, treatment, and specimen collection to specimen-only submissions for testing.
The work supported by the SRC Biochemistry Laboratory has a meaningful impact on patient care and discovery. One researcher from the Center for Autoimmune Liver Disease (CALD) shared their appreciation.
“Thank you for your invaluable support of CALD! Your partnership has made a real difference in the lives of children with autoimmune liver diseases … instrumental in funding critical research that fills knowledge gaps and improves children’s care.”
Stories like this highlight how the lab’s expertise directly contributes to improving outcomes for children and families.
Future Developments and Expansions
Looking ahead, the lab plans to expand its testing menu, including NGAL (BioPorto) for serum and plasma and LP(a) on the Beckman Coulter Chemistry DxC 500 AU. The lab has also broadened services to support pharmaceutical industry research.
