FORT WAYNE — A new planetarium at Science Central is expanding access to space science education in northeast Indiana while supporting broader economic and workforce development goals.
The $2.8 million facility, built within the museum’s existing structure, is now the only public planetarium in the region. Previously, the nearest venue was located at Ball State University.

The planetarium features a 21-foot-high dome with seating for about 50 people and is powered by a Digistar digital projection system designed to create immersive, space-like experiences. Leadership at Science Central says the technology allows visitors to experience simulations that go beyond traditional stargazing.
Regular daytime demonstrations began Thursday, March 26, with plans to introduce evening programming and private rentals in the near future. The facility is managed by Sarah Vise, who previously worked with a planetarium at Ball State.
Support for the project included a starball projector donation from University of Saint Francis.
Regional leaders, including Greater Fort Wayne Inc., view the planetarium as a tool for long-term workforce development, particularly in attracting talent to defense and aerospace industries.
Science Central, a nonprofit serving the community for more than three decades, draws more than 140,000 visitors annually and is seen as a key contributor to downtown Fort Wayne’s continued growth.
