Science Mill hosting Math Universe during spring break

The Science Mill, 101 South Lady Bird Lane in Johnson City, will host Math Universe, a 10-day educational experience running March 11-21 that invites visitors to explore the role of math in nature, art and the cosmos through interactive exhibits and challenges.

Designed for families and students on spring break, the program features a series of activity stations where guests can build spiral galaxies, create fractal snowflakes and test their reflexes against the speed of light. Visitors can also experiment with geometric patterns inspired by nature and take part in a relativity challenge demonstrating how time behaves at extreme speeds.

The program highlights several mathematical concepts that appear throughout the natural world, including the Golden Ratio in art and architecture, spirals and fractals found in pinecones and snowflakes, and probability patterns within Pascal’s Triangle. Exhibits also explore how gravity bends space-time and what happens as objects approach the speed of light.

A special event will take place March 14 in celebration of Pi Day, the annual holiday honoring the mathematical constant. The event will feature a full day of hands-on activities focused on patterns and the hidden mathematics behind everyday life.

In addition to the Math Universe activities, visitors will have access to the Science Mill’s more than 50 permanent exhibits covering robotics, fossils, life science, chemistry, physics, water systems, plants, energy and computer programming.

Tickets and more information are available through the Science Mill website.
