Science Saturday at Smith teaches kids about food and energy

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – Educators in the Sixth Street Museum District celebrated science and healthy eating Saturday by hosting a hands-on seminar for children.

It was all part of the first Science Saturday at Smith for 2026.

That’s an interactive event for kids in the second through fifth grades.

Everything began at the Smith Drugs on Mobile Street and concluded next door at Historic Eureka School.

Saturday’s theme was ‘Energy Bites and Science Delights.’

The focus was on demonstrating how foods provide energy for the body.

“It’s fun, and it’s an educational opportunity,” said Vanessa Molden, operations and visitor engagement manager for the Sixth Street Museum District.

“They’re learning which foods give you fast energy and which foods give you slow-burning energy.”

Two other Science Saturdays at Smith will be held in 2026.

One will be held in June, and the other will take place in September.
