Science Wing addition receives Award of Distinction

Homewood-Flossmoor High School is one of only two schools in Illinois to receive the Award of Distinction, the top honor in the 2025 Exhibition of Educational Environments, for its Science Wing addition.

The award was presented by the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) Service Associates to DLA Architects Ltd. for its work on the newest student facility at H-F. The groundbreaking project was recognized for its student-centered and green building designs.

The Exhibition of Educational Environments highlights designs that meet modern challenges in education, energy use, safety, and sustainability. H-F’s winning project was showcased at the IASB Joint Annual Conference, November 21–23, in Chicago. It now is part of IASB’s School Design Data File, a collection of nearly 700 exemplary projects spanning more than three decades.

The Net Zero-designed building is one of only three Net Zero public schools in Illinois. It draws its own electrical power from solar and heating from 20 thermal wells underground. The building has advanced HVAC systems, high-performance insulation, natural daylighting, and a rooftop solar array.

Students are using cutting-edge equipment in its laboratories. The space has collaborative learning areas and large classroom that offer flexible learning spaces.

Reed Construction built the building at a cost of $22,998,520. Furnishings and other ancillary costs added $2.7 million to the final cost. The Science Wing officially opened to students this past August.

H-F Chief School Business Official Lawrence Cook and Director of Facilities Jim Patterson worked closely with DLA Architects during the design and construction process.

“This award reflects both the forward-thinking vision of our District 233 Board of Education and the collaborative spirit of our school community,” said Superintendent Jennifer Norrell. “The Net Zero Science Building is not only an inspiring space for teaching and learning, but it also represents our commitment to energy efficiency, sustainability and preparing students for the future.”

“H-F has always been known for academic excellence,” said Board President Gerald Pauling. “With the new science building, we now also lead the way in creating sustainable, future-focused learning environments for our students.”
