The day’s events focused on track and field, though the National Senior Games also include sports such as basketball, table tennis and powerlifting.

Chris Fuhrman, a 62-year-old Florida resident, recorded the fastest qualifying time in the 1,500-meter event. Fuhrman has competed in multiple national competitions.

“It’s just you against the track or the pavement,” Fuhrman said. “Just put one foot in front of the other. At the end of the day, hug your partner, get a drink of water and do it again.”

Rick Merrill, 67, competed in shot put and discus. He said the atmosphere at the senior games draws competitors back.

“This is a fun environment to be in,” Merrill said. “Even going to nationals and other places in other states, the folks are fantastic. You meet some good people.”

Merrill also said staying in motion is a priority for him and other competitors.

“I feel like if I sit down and stop, I’m done,” Merrill said. “Anybody can do it. It doesn’t matter what your ability is. As long as you’re 50 or older, we need to keep moving guys. We’re not getting younger but we don’t need to stop.”
