Single review: Backbreaker – ‘Helicon’

This latest track by Glasgow-based psych metal overlords Helicon is the second new single in quite a short period and shows further evidence of them expanding their musical horizons and trying new things.

The punishing guitar and sitar attack is still present at the requisite times but the overall sound is a bit softer than the usual extreme noise terror. The beats are augmented by their American collaborator IA Lover (who is a bit of a dab hand on the decks) and the vocal, in broad East Kilbride Scottish, is actually rather passionate – “love breaks your back, love feels like a heart attack… I feel it when I hear your name” – expect more great things from Helicon in 2026 but for the moment this is a belter…
