Six Times Celebs Broke Fashion Rules And Looked Good Doing It

There are certain rules in fashion and most of us seem to know and adhere to them. Some examples are don’t wear clashing prints, don’t wear white after Labor Day and so on. There are also specific fashion rules for groups of people. For example, there are royal fashion rules which Princess Diana never followed. But, hey, she was still a style icon. When it comes to fashion, we can always count on celebrities to shock, surprise, and influence us. 

Celebrities love to break the fashion rules. After all, that’s what gets us talking and keeps them relevant. Rihanna made waves during her pregnancy with her bold outfit choices. And while Britney Spears has had quite the style transformation, she is one star who breaks the rules constantly and still wins our hearts over and over again. They, and other celebrities, are just some of the names who break the fashion rules and look good while doing it. 

Although Jennifer Lopez has many iconic looks, there’s always one that comes to mind when we think of an unforgettable dress. Lopez stole the show at the 2000 Grammy Awards in a sheer, green Versace dress with a plunging neckline. The dress was so stunning and shocking that it went viral before social media was even a thing. It featured a tropical leaf pattern on its silk chiffon material. While other stars were in tuxedos and long evening gowns, Lopez’s barely there outfit was the talk of the town.

While most men appear wearing dark suits to the Oscars, Timothee Chalamet broke the rules and wore a butter yellow suit to the 2025 Oscars. The suit, which is custom Givenchy, is double-breasted, and features a matching silk yellow shirt. Butter yellow was definitely a trending color on the runways at the time. We especially like the bejeweled closure at the neck. Only Chalamet can pull off such a bold look! We admire his risk taking with this one. 

At the Oscars, most actors appear wearing elaborate gowns. Zendaya? She decided to show off her toned abs at the 2022 Oscars. She wore a custom Valentino ensemble, which featured a white silk crop top and a silver sequined skirt. She accessorized the look with silver bangles and a diamond necklace. She wore her hair up, which we think was the correct choice for this event and would certainly add it to her most gorgeous hair looks. Zendaya always slays her red carpet looks, but this one broke the rules and will go down in fashion history as iconic.

Rihanna seemed to break all the rules during her pregnancies. While most mothers opt to cover up and wear baggy, maternity clothing, Rihanna pushed all the boundaries. Her maternity looks have become some of her most iconic looks to date. During the Dior fall show in Paris in March 2022, Rihanna wore a black, sheer lace slip from the fashion house, showing off her baby bump. She topped it off with a long leather coat and lots of bling. Now that’s one hot mama!

We often think that we should only wear one type of pattern or print at a time. Otherwise, things can clash and look like a hot mess. But one actor sure knows how to wear multiple prints at once and make it work. That actor is Saoirse Ronan. She wore a multi-patterned Duro Olowu dress to the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala in 2016 and it gave off whimsical, garden vibes. She topped it off with a chunky beaded necklace.

If there’s one thing Britney Spears knows how to do, it’s break the rules (and still looking good while doing so). The singer and her boyfriend at the time, Justin Timberlake, appeared at the 2001 American Music Awards wearing matching denim outfits. Not only did they wear denim, but they wore head to toe denim! Timberlake even had a denim hat and Spears had a denim purse! She elevated the look by adding diamond accessories, including a statement choker. We’re not sure that anyone can pull this look off today, but, at the time, Spears and Timberlake had everyone talking.
