Socorro ISD offers buyout program to stabilize finances


Socorro Independent School District (ISD) is launching a voluntary buyout program to stabilize its finances after years of budget challenges.

The district plans to offer a $2,500 incentive to up to 50 employees who choose to resign voluntarily.

This initiative is open to teachers, librarians, administrative staff, and other positions, with the buyout window closing on April 6 of next year and taking effect at the end of the school year.

Andrew Kim, the Texas Education Agency conservator for Socorro ISD, advised employees to “study the incentive bonus, talk to the Human Resource Department,” and ask questions about their personal situations before making a decision.

The district previously announced plans to cut 43 positions in May, following financial pressures that increased after voters rejected Proposition A in November, which would have allowed the district to raise its maintenance and operations tax rate.

Despite facing a multi-million dollar deficit for years, the district’s budget is now balanced, according to Kim. He expressed confidence in the program’s success, noting that last year’s similar initiative exceeded expectations.

“We actually achieved more in than the number that we actually had in mind,” Kim said, adding that they are confident they can achieve the target of 50 participants this year.

Eligible employees are encouraged to consult with human resources before making their decision.

The deadline for participation is April 6.
