“We’ve become a great family and it’s really nice because I am an only child and I’ve always wanted siblings,” Mac said.

Oliver Cirelli, understudy for Kurt and Friedrich, described the educational opportunities that come with touring.

“And we go on field trips everywhere. So, it’s just so cool to be able to see all the different, all the different things that each city has to offer,” Cirelli said.

Ms. T, the traveling tutor, explained the daily schedule that allows the children to maintain their education while performing.

“So, our day usually will begin at 10:30 or 11 a.m. We need to school at least three hours a day,” Ms. T said. “When we go on a field trip, we usually can fulfill that time.”

The tutor highlighted their visit to Memphis landmarks as an example of educational field trips.

“For example, here, we knew we had to see the Lorraine Motel and the Civil Rights Museum. And it was so powerful,” Ms. T said.

Ava Davis, who plays Louisa, discussed the challenges of maintaining high school coursework while touring.

“Doing a high school curriculum on top of tour was definitely an adjustment. But I think that honestly knowing that it’s something I have to do keeps me motivated,” Davis said.

This marks the fifth time The Sound of Music has played at the Orpheum.
