Spring Fashion Show Raises Funds to Support Women’s Education and Careers | Butte County

CHICO, Calif. — Spring has officially arrived, and in Chico, the season was welcomed with style and purpose.

The Soroptimist International of Bidwell Rancho hosted its annual “Spring into Style” fashion show at the Canyon Oaks Country Club, bringing together community members for an afternoon of fashion and philanthropy.

Among the models showcasing seasonal clothing was Action News Now morning anchor Kelli Saam, who joined other local women on the runway. The outfits were provided by local boutiques 5th Street Clothing and For Elyse.

Proceeds from the event support the organization’s mission to help women and girls gain access to education and job training opportunities aimed at economic empowerment.

“High school girls sometimes don’t know what to do after school and may not have the resources to go to college or trade school,” said Babette Maiss, president of the Soroptimist chapter. “We provide resources to introduce them to different career opportunities and offer scholarships for books and other needs.”

Maiss added that the organization also supports older women facing financial hardship, including those who are the sole providers for their families. Scholarships can be used for education-related expenses such as tuition, books and transportation.

Organizers said they hoped to raise $10,000 from the event, funds that will help advance the careers of about half a dozen women in Chico this year. About 150 people attended in support of the cause.
