San Antonio capped another undefeated week to remain on Oklahoma City’s heels for the best record in the West.
SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs have kept it rolling, winning 15 of their last 16 going back to Feb. 1 and cementing themselves as a team to fear come playoff time.
With that strong play comes more NBA accolades for the team’s centerpiece. Days after winning Western Conference Player of the Month honors for February, All-Star Victor Wembanyama has netted conference Player of the Week for the third time in his career.
Wembanyama averaged 26 points, 10.5 rebounds, 4.75 blocks and 2.3 assists over the team’s last four games despite playing 24 minutes or less twice in those matchups. While eight Western Conference players averaged a higher points-per-game total over their last four games, Wembanyama had a higher field goal percentage than all of them at 55.6%. (For good measure, he also hit his shots from deep at a 44% clip.)
The stat line that like clinched the award: His Thursday effort against Detroit in which Wemby recorded 38 points, 16 rebounds, five blocks, three assists and four 3-pointers. He became the first player in NBA history to hit those numbers in a single game.
- March 3, at Philadelphia: 10 points, eight rebounds, six blocks, three steals in 24 minutes
- March 6, versus the LA Clippers: 27 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks in 22 minutes
- March 8, versus Houston: 29 points, eight rebounds, four blocks, two steals in 30 minutes
This is the third time Wembanyama has collected the Western Conference Player of the Week award in his young career.
“If you get enough rest, you do the right things, take care of your body enough during the season, you conditioning gets better,” he said after Sunday’s latest win. “When you combine this with the study of the game, film and not repeating mistakes many times, yeah, you do get better. I feel like I get better, I get more comfortable and more in control.”
Tyler Herro of the Miami Heat won Player of the Week for the Eastern Conference after averaging 26.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists over his team’s last four games.
Another test awaits the Silver & Black when the 43-21 Boston Celtics visit for a battle between the No. 2 seeds in each conference.
