The Dark Sky Festival in Fountain Hills offers a night of astronomy and education on reducing light pollution.
PHOENIX — The Dark Sky Festival returns to Fountain Hills this Saturday with a free, family-friendly event focused on astronomy and protecting the night sky.
The festival runs from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Fountain Hills Community Center and features educational exhibits, live animal encounters, food trucks, and activities for kids, including a passport program with prizes.
Organizers say the event highlights ways to reduce light pollution, such as using shielded lighting and warmer bulbs, which can benefit wildlife, the environment, and human health by supporting natural sleep cycles.
Retired astronaut Susan Kilrain will headline the event, sharing her experience as a space shuttle pilot.
The evening wraps up with a “star party” beginning around 7 p.m., where attendees can view planets, stars and other celestial objects through telescopes. Organizers will also share updates on the planned International Dark Sky Discovery Center.
