Phoenix Suns guard Jalen Green has been fined $25,000 for using profanity during a live post-game television interview after the team’s 115-101 win over the Washington Wizards on Monday, Dec. 29.
The incident occurred when Green, who has been out recovering from a hamstring injury, ran up to teammate Collin Gillespie as he was being interviewed live on the court by Arizona’s Family Sports soon after the game concluded.
Gillespie scored 25 points, including five 3-point shots made, and dished out six assists in the win.
Green, who has been accompanying the team and providing support from the bench while recovering from a right hamstring injury, came up to Gillespie and said, ”They can’t even (expletive) with you,” in a show of exuberant support for his teammate’s performance.
Gillespie reacted, saying, “Oh my God. On live TV, bro?” Green responded: “I don’t care.”
Suns teammate Jordan Goodwin, who scored 14 points, was with Gillespie and had his arm around him when Green arrived. Dillon Brooks also later ran up to Gillespie in a show of support during the interview, saying, ”Mr. Consistent,” then continuing to compliment Gillespie.
“We appreciate you for your hard work,” Brooks said while still on camera.
The fine was announced on Tuesday, Dec. 30, by James Jones, the NBA’s executive vice president and head of basketball operations. Jones previously was the Suns’ general manager.
Green has only played one full game and part of another for the Suns because of the hamstring injury, which occurred during the summer during preseason workouts after coming to Phoenix as part of the deal that sent Kevin Durant to Houston. Brooks also came to the Suns as part of that trade.
Green returned initially from the injury for the Nov. 6 game against the Clippers in Phoenix, a 115-102 Phoenix home win. Green led the team with 29 points. Two days later, the Suns played the Clippers again in L.A., during which Green reinjured his right hamstring in the first half. He’s been out since then, with no specific timeline for his return.
