Tangipahoa Parish Library is bringing back its Science Expo!
The event will be Saturday, Feb. 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hammond Branch Library.
This will be a STEM event. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. It is an initiative designed to encourage young people to consider these areas as possible career paths.
Why is STEM programming important? One reason lies in the fact that so much of our lives involve technology of one kind or another. Career fields in medicine, building design and planning require an understanding of various sciences such as biology, chemistry and mathematics.
The sciences also equip individuals with critical thinking skills, which helps with problem-solving and allows us to better navigate and understand the world around us.
The expo will feature a cardboard building challenge, a LEGO building station, STEM-themed crafts and a LEGO competition. Some of the organizations that will be taking part are:
Northshore Technical Community College STEM Lab
Tulane Center for K-12 STEM Education
Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station
North Oaks School of Radiologic Technology
Milan’s Restaurant will provide food.
Bring the family and join us at the Science Expo. This event is free and open to the public.
Barry Bradford is director of Tangipahoa Parish Library.
