Tania Fares on How FTA Continues to Shape Arab Fashion


As far as fashion incubators go, without a doubt, Fashion Trust Arabia (FTA) is the region’s most significant. Since its first edition in 2018, the FTA has showcased some of the Arab world’s most prominent young designers and continues to get bigger and better. “What started as a prize to support emerging designers has now become a full ecosystem – connecting designers, mentors, retailers and institutions from across the Arab world and beyond,” says Tania Fares, Co-Founder and Co-Chair of FTA. Over the years, while they have expanded their reach and impact, their mission remains the same: to champion creativity from the region and spotlight it on the global stage.

As the FTA returns to Doha this year, Fares describes the moment as a homecoming. “Doha is where our story began. Every time we return, there is a sense of gratitude. Qatar continues to support creativity in such a meaningful way.” This year’s theme, Threads of Impact, works as both concept and reflection, anchoring the program in the story of the past seven years. “The idea behind this theme was to reflect on 7 years of FTA and the lasting mark fashion can leave – not just creatively, but socially and culturally. It’s about celebrating the connections we’ve built over the years, the designers who have gone on to inspire others and the shared stories that bind our region together through creativity,” notes Fares. Needless to say, there’s a lot to look forward to, including new mentorship opportunities, stronger retail partnerships and the Threads of Impact exhibition.

India also steps into the spotlight this year as the guest country, introduced through a partnership with the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre. For Fares, the choice felt natural. “India has such a rich and diverse fashion heritage, and there has always been a creative dialogue between India and the Arab world,” she explains. Fares adds that Indian designers bring incredible craftsmanship, storytelling and artistry – values that resonate with the spirit of FTA. Their inclusion opens the door for cultural exchange that extends well beyond the event itself.

Elsewhere, retail partnerships are another essential cornerstone of the FTA, as partners such as Harrods, Ounass and The Bicester Collection remain vital in supporting designers as they navigate the next stages of their careers. “These partnerships are truly transformative for our winners. They provide real business opportunities – from retail exposure to mentorship and visibility on an international scale,” she affirms. For the winners, this kind of long-term support helps turn talent into sustainable brands.

For Fares, this year’s edition feels incredibly special, adding that they’ve curated a dynamic and meaningful program. “From JW Anderson’s welcome reception to the Franca Fund Gala, which we’re so proud to support for the first time – it’s a true celebration of creativity and purpose,” she affirms. The three days will see the judges and advisory board connect with the finalists alongside the Threads of Impact exhibition, which highlights the journey of past designers, as well as a series of events that reinforce FTA’s purpose to support, celebrate and connect regional talent with the world. “There are so many success stories I’m proud of, but seeing designers like Roni Helou, Bil Arabi, and Nafsika Skourti grow their brands and expand globally has been incredibly fulfilling. Each of them shows what can happen when talent meets opportunity,” Fares proudly adds.

For new applicants, her advice is straightforward. “Be authentic. Stay true to your story, your roots and your creative voice. And do not give up. The journey is not easy, but it is worth it. Believe in your vision and keep pushing forward. You never know where it can take you.”
