Taxi drivers are on strike across Greece over government timelines for their obligatory transition to using electric vehicles and against competition from other chauffeuring services.

Athens taxi drivers launched a three-day strike Tuesday — which ends at 6 a.m. Friday — while cabbies all over Greece are walking off the job Wednesday and Thursday.

As of January 1, all new taxis granted permission to operate in Athens and Thessaloniki must be electric-powered. But unionists say that is too soon, arguing that the cities lack necessary recharging facilities, and want the deadline extended for several years.

Athens taxi drivers are planning a protest drive to the capital’s airport Wednesday.
