“This is the tale of a witch…” Science Saru in Japan has unveiled the first look teaser for an animated film titled Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia being directed by animation filmmaker Abel Gongora (of Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye and “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off“). One of the next animation projects from the iconic studio Science Saru (Inu-Oh, The Colors Within, Ride Your Wave). This is the story of one witch who toyed with a vast continent. The film is set for a TV debut in Japan in July 2026 – no theaters for this. Set in the 13th century during the reign of Emperor Genghis Khan and his march through the Mongolian Empire – one girl messes with his plans in Iran after becoming educated by scholars. This is the story of Jaadugar, the “witch in Mongolia”. When he arrives “her quiet days come to an end, and the wheels of fate begin to turn.” The final voice cast has not been announced yet. This animation style reminds me of the very lovely Little Amelie animated film also out this year. Stay tuned for any updates on Jaadugar leading up to its release next year.
Here’s the first teaser (+ poster) for Abel Gongora’s film Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia, via YouTube:

There was once a young girl in the 13th century slave markets of Iran. This is the tale of a witch who toyed with a vast continent. After losing her mother and being torn far from her homeland, Sitara found herself utterly alone, with no ability to survive, and no hope for the future. Taken in by a family of scholars, the power of “knowledge” is imparted on her within the calm of her new life. Meanwhile, under the reign of brutal Emperor Genghis Khan, the mighty Mongol Empire continues its unstoppable march, conquering nation after nation and expanding its influence across the world. When that boundless ambition finally reaches Sitara’s city, her quiet days come to an end, and the wheels of fate begin to turn. Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia, also titled 天幕のジャードゥーガル in Japanese, is directed by the animation filmmaker Abel Gongora, director of Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye and the “Dandadan” series, plus “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” & “You0 DECO” series. Based on the original story “A Witch’s Life in Mongol” by Tomato Soup. Naoko Yamada is executive director. Kenichi Yoshida on Character Design & Sakuga. With music by Koshiro Hino. With animation by Science Saru. Gongora’s Jaadugar film will release in Japan on TV Asahi’s nationwide 24-station network “IMAnimation” slot in July 2026 next summer.
