Gerald’s Game
Distribution: Netflix Original
Directed by modern horror legend Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass), Gerald’s Game was the first King adaptation on Netflix, and it’s quite possibly the greatest. It’s a weird concept, but it offers up all of the tension and psychological horror that King is best known for.
The movie follows couple Gerald (Bruce Greenwood) and Jessie (Carla Gugino) as they head to a secluded spot to rekindle their faltering relationship. While sleeping together in a remote cabin, during foreplay, Gerald shockingly drops dead and Jessie is left handcuffed to the bed, her husband’s cadaver draped on top of her. As time passes, she grows delirious, and the plot takes terrifying twists and turns.
Netflix has adapted King’s works into a few Netflix Original offerings over the years, but this one us undoubtedly the best.
49
Spaceman
Distribution: Netflix Original
Adam Sandler’s Spaceman (2024) was inherently divisive among viewers; it’s certainly not a film for everyone. Based on the the 2017 novel Spaceman of Bohemia, the movie follows Jakub, a lonely astronaut stuck in outer space, far from any sort of civilisation. The film is a hugely atmospheric (and very claustrophobic) story about a man not only pondering the universe, but also his home and his wife. The movie also stars Paul Dano as the voice of Hanuš, an enigmatic creature — possibly a hallucinational figure — Jakub finds on the craft.
48
Ballad of a Small Player
Distribution: Netflix Original
Directed by Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front, Conclave), The Ballad of a Small Player is based on the novel by Lawrence Osborne, although it does go in its own direction. It’s a deeply thought-provoking psychological drama about gambling and desperation, captured through breathtaking cinematography. The movie explores themes of luck, addiction, and fate.
Set in Macau, famously one of the world’s gambling capitals, we follow Lord Doyle (Colin Farrell), an eccentric-yet-flawed British gambler who appears to be living his dream life in China. However, he’s really in hiding there after losing everything back home. As the past catches up to him, he finds himself between a rock and a hard place.
47
The King
Distribution: Netflix Original
Before he starred in Dune and Wonka, Timothée Chalamet played Hal, the Prince of Wales, who would become King Henry V in 1413 following the aftermath of his brother’s death. The epic historical movie is a loose adaptation of William Shakespeares seminal Henriad plays.
The King also stars Taron Egerton, Robert Pattinson, Ben Mendelsohn, and Lily-Rose Depp.
46
Damsel
Distribution: Netflix Original
Millie Bobby Brown shines as Elodie, a young girl who marries a handsome prince… only to quickly learn that the entire marriage was a trap. Before long, she’s plunged into a cave, where there lurks a dragon out to get her. What follows is a fight for survival as Elodie battles one of the genre’s greatest foes.
The film is a mixed bag. Sure, the plot is a bit hollow. It sets up a simple premise, offering plenty of fantastic action sequences and an exceptional performance from Millie Bobby Brown. In terms of ratings, it wasn’t quite so impressive. The movie currently boasts a meagre 56% on IMDb, which is probably a little harsh. Damsel was most-watched Netflix film for the first half of 2024 and remains the 10th most successful movie on the streamer.
45
The Babysitter
Distribution: Netflix Original
Starring Samara Weaving as the titular babysitter, 2017’s The Babysitter blends comedy, thriller, horror, and slasher elements. Cole soon learns that he’s to be her first blood sacrifice, and so the film becomes a fight for him to survive the night.
After a strong debut, The Babysitter merited a sequel movie, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, in 2020.
44

42
I’m Thinking of Ending Things

The atmospheric, thought-provoking story follows a young woman joins her boyfriend on a road trip to meet him parents on their remote farm. It’s also filmed in a beautiful retro style.
The movie seamlessly blends together psychological horror with mystery and intrigue. It’s abstract and slow-burning, leaving you clutching onto every scene. This is definitely a niche film, but it’s worth the strange journey.
41
Bird Box
Distribution: Netflix Original
Releasing back in 2018, Bird Box was an instant hit. In fact, it quickly placed in Netflix’s most popular movies of all-time, remaining in the top 10 today. Based on the best-selling novel, Bird Box sets the scene in a post-apocalyptic world, where an unseen entity compels people to commit suicide. Naturally, in a move for survival, people mask their faces. The story follows Malorie, who’s determined to protect two children. While completely blindfolded, they traverse the post-apocalyptic lands, ultimately attaching themselves to a ragtag group of survivors. It’s a story of survival, hope, and determination.

It boasts an all-star cast, including Jodie Comer (Isla), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Jamie), Ralph Fiennes (Dr. Ian Kelson), and 14-year-old breakout star Alfie Williams (Spike).
