The 9 Best Fashion Pairings

From jewel tones paired with pastels to full-on technicolor, the fall/winter 2025 runways delivered a kaleidoscope of color combinations to play with for the season. Across catwalks and street style, designers and fashion insiders layered hues in the most unexpected ways. But, thanks to the deliberate styling and tonal layering, even the boldest choices felt unexpectedly wearable. Pairings like mint and brown brought a cool breath to autumn’s favorite neutral, golden saffron warmed up burgundy leather layers, and, when given the cold-weather treatment, ruby red with ballet pink became contemporary, rather than cutesy.

In terms of practical application, if you’re color-fluent, let a single statement hue be the focal point of your look and use the supporting shade to thread the outfit together. If you’re color-cautious, start small and accent the more subdued tints with contrasting accessories or separates: a chartreuse turtleneck under a gray blazer, a crimson bag with a navy suit, a merlot scarf against an olive trench coat. Regardless of where you land on the color spectrum, you can play with silhouette proportions and placement to get the desired vibrancy effect.

Finish matters as well. The same palette can read day or night, depending on the texture. Use fabric to control that intensity: matte wool and brushed cashmere soften bright notes, while high-shine silk and glossy patent leather amplify them; mohair, bouclé, and faux fur add dimension to colors. You can also incorporate metallics, whether through jewelry or details like buckles and zips, to play further with undertones: gold for a warmer palette, silver for a cooler one.

Consider this list your color compass for fall. Below, nine power duos to plug-and-play with items in your closet from now until spring.

Mint + Brown

Mint cools the warmth of brown hues, giving suiting and tailored separates a fresh edge. Try a frosty knit under a chocolate blazer or a spearmint pencil skirt with an espresso-hued button-down. If your preferred palette is more grounded in neutrals, you’re in luck: Accessories, like a seafoam handbag, can add a pop of color to a brown-heavy look.

Mustard clashes against burgundy in the best way possible, adding a deep contrast to the red-brown shade. Play down a saffron dress with a burgundy bomber or trench, or bring attention to cognac-hued leather pieces with touches of marigold. While a deep yellow and merlot complement each other’s richness, a neon yellow will add youthful energy to a well-aged wine hue.

The fall 2025 runways were full of jewel tones paired with pastels. But no combination is more fitting for the sweetness of engagement season and Valentine’s Day than ruby red and ballet pink. Double down on the romance with sweet adornments and flowy silhouettes, or keep the look minimal with graphic color-blocking and clean silhouettes.

Burnt Orange + Brown

Rust, yam, and pumpkin hues create a perfectly tonal fall story. Pair a persimmon polo with chestnut track pants for daytime, and elevate the look at night with a satin burnt orange coat styled with coffee-hued suede pants or a silky burnt sienna slip dress, worn with a chocolate-colored leather jacket. Simple leather or suede brown accessories keep things cohesive with this combo.

Chartreuse + Gray

Zesty chartreuse wakes up mid-to-deep grays from winter hibernation. Fair warning: Use the electric yellow-green hue sparingly—a sweater, bag, or a shoe is plenty—to spotlight your go-to staples. Keep your shapes minimal so the high-impact palette does most of the talking.

Cherry Red + Navy Blue

Technicolors painted the fall 2025 landscape red, blue, and green. Navy and cherry red, in particular, create a high-octane combo for colder months (the former’s restraint tempers the latter’s vibrancy). A navy coat over a red dress feels bold yet classic; when thrown over a red knit set, it takes on a sport-adjacent look. Bonus: Primary colors will still be having a moment in spring, as well.

Earthy greens cool the intensity of burgundy, landing the combo in elegant utilitarian territory. Start with a statement jacket in one of the two colorways. Then, layer a merlot knit and silky moss skirt (or satin cargo pants in the hue) underneath. Finish with leather accessories or antique-gold jewelry to tie it all together.

Whether in eggplant, lilac, or violet, purple was the most predominant color of the season. The shade looks practically royal when worn monochromatically. On the other end of the color wheel, the palette pops against cooler tones like slate and pewter. Try a gray suit with a saturated grape bag for office hours, or a festive silver skirt with an ultraviolet pump for a holiday party.

White + Red

Cream, ivory, and winter whites create a blank canvas for a single red accent. Think: a snowy coat with a crimson scarf or hat, an ivory knit set with ruby boots, or an ecru suit with a scarlet bag. Keep textures plush (cashmere, bouclé, mohair, etc.), so the contrast reads cozy and lived-in, rather than stark.
