The Hellenic Initiative, a global nonprofit organization that supports Greece, raised more than $1 million during a major fundraising weekend in Chicago that brought together thousands of members of the Greek diaspora in a show of unity and support.
The weekend culminated on Saturday, March 7, with a black-tie gala and a sold-out concert by Greek singer Konstantinos Argiros at the United Center. Organizers described the event as the largest gathering in history of the Greek diaspora in support of Greece.
The Hellenic Initiative honors John P. Calamos Sr. at Chicago gala
Before the concert, guests attended a gala dinner hosted by THI Vice Chairman John S. Koudounis in honor of renowned investor and philanthropist John P. Calamos Sr. During the evening, Calamos received The Hellenic Initiative Lifetime Achievement Award from Koudounis and THI President George P. Stamas.
The award recognized Calamos for his longstanding contributions to business, philanthropy, and the Greek diaspora. The dinner also brought together leaders of the Greek-American community, philanthropists, business executives, and supporters of Greece.
Sold out concert draws more than 13,000 people
After the dinner, guests joined more than 13,000 people for the sold-out Konstantinos Argiros concert, which benefited THI and helped lift the weekend’s fundraising total above $1 million.
The turnout highlighted the enduring ties between the Greek diaspora and Greece, as well as the role major cultural events can play in mobilizing philanthropic support.
Before introducing Argiros, Koudounis told the crowd he had never felt prouder to be Greek. He pointed to the audience’s shared commitment to Greece and to investing in the country’s future. He also introduced a video about THI’s mission and the purpose of the evening.
Weekend opens with reception
The fundraising weekend began the previous evening with a reception hosted by Calamos Investments for dinner sponsors and supporters. The gathering set the tone for a weekend focused on strengthening the diaspora’s commitment to Greece’s future.
During the reception, Koudounis, who had turned 60 the day before, was surprised by his family with a video tribute, a cake, and a gift from THI. Argiros then led attendees in singing “Happy Birthday.”
Stamas described the Chicago events as a major success for the organization and thanked Koudounis for his leadership in helping make the weekend possible.
A night of emotion
THI Board Member Cathy Sakellaris said the emotion inside the arena was unmistakable, with Greeks of all generations sharing a sense of pride, joy, and connection.
She compared the atmosphere to the opening ceremony of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, saying the same feeling of unity, identity, and pride filled the venue throughout the night.
How Hellenic Initiative’s Chicago fundraiser weekend will support Greece’s growth
The money raised during the weekend will support THI’s philanthropic and economic development initiatives in Greece, with a focus on entrepreneurship, job creation, and humanitarian aid.
Since its founding, The Hellenic Initiative has invested more than $10.5 million in humanitarian aid grants and more than $13.5 million in economic development programs, helping strengthen communities across Greece and support long-term growth.
