With the 2025-26 regular season winding down, one fact remains clear: the race in the Eastern Conference is wide open.
That narrative started true at the beginning of the year, and it remains true entering March. As of Wednesday morning, Detroit is the only team with more than 41 wins. Eight other teams are at least .500, all within a handful of games of each other.

While it is early to look beyond 2025-26, there’s an argument that 2026-27 could be even more “wide open.”
Using that framework, the key fact is this: there will be additional teams who could “matter” next year.
That includes teams playing well currently, who could be even better. But the conference’s worst teams in 2025-26 will look to be semi-competitive and even playoff-worthy next season. In short, the conference may not just be deeper, but more franchises could make the case for themselves as a top-two or three-team in the East, with a chance to represent the conference in the 2027 NBA Finals.
Improvement Among the Bottom Feeders
One key reason why the Eastern Conference will be much improved next year is that the bottom projects to not be as horrible as it is now.

The Washington Wizards, Brooklyn Nets, and Indiana Pacers all sit with 16 wins or fewer. By record, three of the four worst teams are in the East.
The Wizards recently traded for two former All-Stars in Trae Young and Anthony Davis. Washington also boasts a strong core of young players, with promising second-year player Alex Sarr at the forefront.
Like the Wizards, Indiana also finalized moves meant to focus on getting on track next year. The reigning Eastern Conference Champions acquired Ivica Zubac to fill the hole left behind by Myles Turner‘s departure. The Pacers will also get back an All-NBA caliber guard in Tyrese Haliburton from his injury, along with most of the core from their Finals run.

Outside of Michael Porter Jr., Brooklyn doesn’t have another clear, All-Star-caliber player on their roster. The Nets also don’t control their first round pick in 2026-27 NBA Draft, which means they’ll have little incentive to lose next season. Thankfully for them, they do have ample cap space to bring in some upgrades.
The Giannis Wild Card
To date, the Milwaukee Bucks are trending in the wrong direction. The Bucks sit at 26-34, four games out from even getting into the last spot of the Play-In.
More importantly, there’s an unknown future for their franchise cornerstone in Giannis Antetokounmpo.

One key way the East could also be better next year: if the Giannis sweepstakes end with him staying out East, rather than being traded to a Western Conference team.
Heading into the most recent trade deadline, several Eastern Conference teams emerged as preferred landing spots for the superstar. Among them, Miami and New York, according to ESPN.
Especially in Miami’s case, the Heat adding Giannis suddenly propels one middling team in the conference to at least the top-six. If he went West, a suddenly deep conference would get even bigger. That said, him going instead to one of the Eastern Conference franchises keeps a key superstar who could very well lead them to the cusp of a championship.
Significance Going Forward
Is there a clear favorite in the Eastern Conference? It’s a dominating question for the rest of the current season 2025-26, but that question won’t go away next year, either.

Detroit, the top team in the conference, returns their young core and could make a splash move in the future. Cleveland and New York are in win-now mode, while Boston and Indiana will be getting their superstars back. Philadelphia, Toronto, and Orlando could be in the mix for top-four seeds next year. Charlotte is quietly on a roll and has a future for fans to be excited about. As mentioned earlier, New York and Miami could take a massive leap by adding Giannis.
On the flip side, outside of Chicago and Milwaukee, in a post-Giannis world, every team will arguably be better or at least play as well in 2026-27 compared to 2025-26.
This year, a team from the West is likely to take home the crown. Oklahoma City, Denver and San Antonio are the three favorites, according to DraftKings. After that, the next four teams — Cleveland, Boston, Detroit and New York — are all from the East.

Yet, there’s a solid chance by next year, any of those four East teams might not make it out of the first round.
The Eastern Conference will be back, better, and even more wide open in 2026-27.
