NEW YORK – ‘The Spirit of 1821: Music, Costume, and the Living Legacy of the Greek Revolution’, a special cultural event will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 7 PM, at the Stathakion Cultural Center, 22-51 29th Street in Astoria.
New York Greek Independence Parade Chairman Lou Katsos shared the event in a post on social media:
“As Chairman of Federation Greek Independence Day Parade in New York 2026, I am proud to announce another of many amazing events leading to the parade down 5th Avenue, and the largest in the global Hellenic diaspora, on April 26, 2026. On the evening of April 14, 2026, at the Stathakion Center in Long Island City, we will host a special cultural event celebrating the living traditions of the Greek War of Independence of 1821. Through music, costume, and shared memory, the program will evoke the spirit of the era that gave birth to the modern Hellenic state.”
“The evening will feature Greek musicians performing in traditional attire, presenting regional musical traditions that formed the soundtrack of the revolutionary period,” Katsos continued. “Among them will be the stirring Kleftika, the heroic songs associated with the mountain fighters and kleft bands who resisted Ottoman rule, as well as Nisotika, the vibrant musical traditions of the Hellenic islands. These songs, carried for generations through oral tradition, reflect the courage, struggles, and aspirations of the men and women who lived through the Revolution.”
Complementing the music will be a presentation of numerous traditional regional costumes, worn by participants and representing different parts of the Greek world,” Katsos noted. “From mainland warrior dress to the distinctive garments of the islands, these costumes embody the remarkable diversity of the Hellenic cultural landscape during the revolutionary era.”
