New York, November 17

The Hellenic Initiative (THI) congratulates Founding Board Member John Georges on his appointment as Honorary Consul of Greece in New Orleans. He was recently sworn in by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexandra Papadopoulou at a ceremony held in Washington, DC.

The first Consulate of Greece in the US was established in New Orleans, by decree of President Lincoln in 1864. That same year in New Orleans the first Greek Orthodox Church in the US was born, the Holy Trintiy Church of New Orleans.

As The National Herald reported Georges is “an entrepreneur in multiple industries, an avowed philanthropist, and a strong supporter of Hellenic causes.”

Georges is founder and CEO of Georges Enterprises, a company based in Elmwood, LA specializing in acquiring and growing businesses. It invests in food vending, grocery distribution, video/arcade entertainment, restaurants and media outlets. In 2013, Georges Enterprises acquired the Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper The Advocate, and in 2019 the Advocate purchased the renowned Times-Picayune.

Georges is very involved with both Louisiana public life and the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Orleans. As president of the Parish Council he was instrumental in rebuilding the Cathedral after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 – raising over $4 million in just three months. Georges is also a member of the Board of the Friends of St. Nicholas, which was instrumental in the completion the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center in New York.

Founded in 2012, THI is the only global non-profit organization that unites Greeks around the world around philanthropy through investing in the future of Greece. Since its founding, THI has raised more than $38 million and has grown to be the largest Greek Diaspora organization in the world. More information is available at thehellenicinitiative.org.

George P. Stamas, THI’s Board President, stated: “From the founding of THI, John as been one of the architects of our mission and vision and we congratulate him on this most appropriate honor and recognition of his dedication.”
