There is no correlation between a film’s budget and its quality. There have been blockbusters over the years that have appealed primarily to dedicated fans, and that, too, for a limited time. This has often been enough for those movies to overtake far more acclaimed films at the box office. For instance, two of Michael Bay‘s five Transformers movies passed the coveted $1 billion mark globally. Last year, A Minecraft Movie grossed nearly as much as Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer, which was released a couple of years prior. But few movies have been as expensive as the Jurassic World sequels. At the time of its release, the rebooted franchise’s second installment — Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom — was the most expensive film ever made. It’s now heading to a new streamer, along with the first and third films.
Released in 2018, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom brought back stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, while Jeff Goldblum reprised his role from the original trilogy and Justice Smith joined the cast along with several others. Meanwhile, director Colin Trevorrow chose to switch franchises and begin developing a Star Wars movie. He was eventually removed from the role, and returned to bring the Jurassic World trilogy home with Jurassic World Dominion. The middle film, however, was directed by horror specialist J.A. Bayona. Unlike the more action-adventure-oriented first Jurassic World film, Bayona’s sequel featured several of his trademark scary scenes. The movie received mixed reviews, however, and is now sitting at a 47% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The website’s consensus reads, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom adds another set piece-packed entry to the blockbuster franchise, although genuinely thrilling moments are in increasingly short supply.”
Here’s the Most Expensive Movie Ever Made
In her review, critic Roxana Hadadi wrote that it was “irritatingly derivative of every preceding film in this franchise.” Despite the lukewarm reception, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom earned more than $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office. However, profits must have been limited considering its record-breaking reported budget of $465 million. It has since been overtaken as the most expensive film of all time by Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker, which reportedly cost $490 million to produce. The Jurassic World franchise was recently rebooted again, with Gareth Edwards‘ Jurassic World Rebirth. You can watch Pratt’s trilogy on Netflix this March.
