For decades, the fashion industry has faced a choice between two bad options: real fur, which causes immense suffering to animals, or faux fur, which is essentially plastic. Now, a startup called BioFluff is offering something genuinely different, and the timing could not be better.
Founded in 2023, BioFluff makes luxury fur alternatives entirely from natural fibers. The company has two product lines under the Savian label. Savian Naturals uses plant fibers including hemp, flax, and nettle. Savian Silks draws on silk fibers. Neither line relies on animal pelts or synthetic plastics, which puts BioFluff in a category of its own.
That distinction matters more than it might seem. Real fur has a well-documented and damning animal welfare record. But conventional faux fur is far from a clean solution. It is made primarily from polyester and acrylic, both petroleum-derived plastics that shed microfibers and contribute to long-term environmental damage. Swapping one problem for another was never going to be enough.
BioFluff is now opening its first showroom in Paris, and Savian pieces have already appeared on several runways this season. The momentum is real. This comes at a moment when major fashion houses have largely stepped back from animal fur, leaving space for genuinely better materials to move in.
The plant-based fiber approach also fits a broader shift happening across food, beauty, and now fashion. Turning to what the earth already provides is proving to be a smarter path forward than engineering synthetic substitutes.
