Thompson alum Chaney Johnson scores first NBA baskets in Nets debut

Johnson signed a contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers on June 27, 2025 after going undrafted ahead of the 2025 season. He played a preseason game with the Cavs on Oct. 12 against the Boston Celtics, scoring four points in seven minutes.

However, he was waived two days later and started the season with the Cleveland Charge of the G-League. Johnson started in 10 of his 16 appearances, averaging 12.8 points and 5.4 rebounds in 25.5 minutes per game. He shot 60.4 percent from the floor and 40 percent on 3-pointers.

Johnson was a standout at Thompson in high school, earning an All-County Second Team selection in 2020 after leading the Warriors in scoring his senior year with 13.4 points and 4.4 assists per game.

He signed with UAH and spent three seasons with the Chargers, eventually winning Gulf South Player of the Year and Alabama Sportswriters Association Small College Athlete of the year in 2023 by averaging 15.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game as a sophomore.

Johnson transferred to Auburn for his final two years after impressing then-coach Bruce Pearl during an exhibition, and he averaged 7.0 points and 4.2 rebounds per game over his two seasons with the Tigers.

Johnson was a role player with Auburn, starting just five games, but left a reputation as one of the hardest workers on the team. He helped the Tigers win the SEC Championship in 2024 before playing a key role in the team’s run to the Final Four in 2025.
