Newcastle piled more pressure on beleaguered Tottenham boss Thomas Frank with a deserved 2-1 win in north London.
Eddie Howe’s side headed into this game on a form slump of their own, having lost the most recent three matches of a four-game winless run.
But they were comfortably the better side throughout this first half against their listless hosts. Former Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock thought he had a 43-minute breakthrough before Spurs were granted a wafer-thin VAR reprieve.
The manner in which Frank’s side entirely failed to manage such moments was starkly worrying as they finished the night hovering perilously close to the relegation zone.
After the Willock let-off, Tottenham allowed Malik Thiaw to open the scoring in first-half stoppage time.
They were jeered off at the interval and the Spurs faithful had their patience tested once again as their team shot themselves in the foot once again during the second period.
Archie Gray slammed home from a 64th-minute corner but, just four minutes later, Anthony Gordon found a brilliant assist for Jacob Ramsey to dispatch his first Newcastle goal.
It proved to be the winner and more boos followed. Newcastle move into the top half of the table, which is feeling like unacceptably distant territory for their opponents.

Tottenham vs. Newcastle talking points, analysis
Will Tottenham sack Thomas Frank?
At this stage, this absolutely has to be a conversation. Spurs are a club who, despite the imperfections of the Ange Postecoglou era, won a European trophy last season. They might have a hefty list of injuries and struggle for dependable goalscorers, but they have a Champions League squad that will contest the last 16 of Europe’s premier competition next month.
It is entirely unacceptable for them to be languishing in 16th position on 29 points, behind Leeds United after the Yorkshire club’s impressive comeback draw at Chelsea. That sort of character appears to be entirely beyond Frank’s players right now.
The Tottenham fans sang Mauricio Pochettino’s name as their side struggled, but their former boss is otherwise engaged until at least the summer with the United States men’s national team at a home World Cup. The lack of available and viable alternatives might be one of the few things Frank has in his favour right now, but this cannot go on. I guess Ange isn’t doing anything? At least that was fun.
Will Tottenham get relegated?
Like the conversation over Frank’s future, we’re at the stage where this must be a live discussion.
Third-bottom West Ham were chasing victory over Manchester United to move them to within three points of Spurs on Tuesday, having won three of their past four matches. That run started with a win over Spurs who, by contrast, are winless in their past eight Premier League matches and have won just two out of the past 17. Whichever way you slice it, that’s relegation form.
If fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest beat marooned bottom club Wolves on Wednesday, they will join Spurs on 29 points. Tottenham’s next game? A home north London derby against table-topping Arsenal on February 22. Yikes.

2 hours to kickoff: For the second straight season, Tottenham are experiencing polar opposite fortunes in Premier League and European competitions. While they sit 15th in the Premier League table 25 matches into Thomas Frank’s debut season, they managed to secure a fourth-place finish in the league phase of Champions League action.
That’s key for Frank who now gets room to breathe as they recover their Premier League position, not scheduled to compete in the Round of 16 in Europe until the middle of March. Thanks to their early FA Cup exit, Spurs won’t play again after this match until February 22.
With a debilitatingly long injury list to push through, that extra time will be vital to get the squad back closer to full fitness.
