Trump praises alliance with Greece

The official letter from President Donald Trump accepting the credentials of Greece’s new ambassador in Washington, Antonis Alexandridis, is being read in Athens as a concise assessment of the new framework governing Greek-American relations.

In the letter, Trump outlines the priorities of US policy, concluding that the relationship between the two countries “has never been stronger.”

Diplomatic sources in Athens say a new environment has taken shape in recent months, rooted in maximizing Greece’s geostrategic position and the longstanding recognition that the country is a pillar of stability and a reliable ally in the Eastern Mediterranean.

US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle said at the Nisyros Dialogues on Tuesday that Greece is at the center of American planning for the region, with energy a primary focus.

Greece is seeking a multidimensional role, including through the Greece-Ukraine Vertical Corridor as an energy hub for alternative natural gas supplies to Europe.

Greek-owned vessels transport 25% of US LNG, diplomatic sources note. Recent concession agreements signed with Chevron for hydrocarbon exploration south of Crete and the Peloponnese underscore the upgraded ties.

Trump also cited Greece’s steady course toward NATO’s 5% of GDP defense spending target and revived talks on building US frigates in Greece.
