Ahead of her sophomore album release this summer, Tyla is quite literally shedding her (snake)skin with a boundary-pushing optical illusion style moment. Just days after paying homage to Madonna’s iconic Jean Paul Gautier cone bra at Paris Fashion Week, the “Water” singer upped the sartorial ante while wearing nothing but a temporary tattoo repurposed as a daring completely backless top.

While closing out Paris Fashion Week at the city’s legendary nightlife haunt Crazy Horse cabaret, Tyla’s bold temporary ink became the pièce de résistance of her entire Y2K-coded outfit. At first glance, the South African singer appeared to be wearing a long-sleeved top featuring a burnt orange, black, and dark brown snakeskin print. However, designer Simon Carle revealed that the skintight serpentine look was actually a temporary tattoo that he’d painstakingly applied to her bare skin.

Both Tyla and Carle shared different angles of the tattoo top on Instagram on March 10, revealing that the turtleneck design featured several sheets of scaly ink designs that left the singer’s bedazzled belly button piercing exposed. From the front, Tyla’s tattoo top was designed to look like it had multiple zippers, pockets, and a built-in belt. Turning for the cameras, the star revealed that her snakeskin top abruptly cut off under her arms, leaving her entire back bare.

Leaning into the Noughties-inspired style moment, Tyla paired the barely-there top with unbuttoned ultra-low rise Rock Revival jeans, which featured a skinny silhouette and a distressed dark wash. The Grammy Award-winning star also took inspiration from thefashion archives with her towering DSquared Fall 2016 Samurai heels, and slung a Valentino chain python bag over one shoulder. Removing a fluffy taupe jacket to show off her top as she left her hotel, Tyla styled her black hair in a waist-grazing blowout and accessorized with a gold Chanel chain necklace.
