ROTATED VILLA KEEP ON WINNING
Eight changes, eight wins.
This had the feel of a potential trap match for Aston Villa. They were on a high from stunning Premier League leaders Arsenal on Saturday, but only three players retained their starting spot in Switzerland.
The heavy rotation made for a less fluid performance than some of Villa’s recent showings and the teams went in level at the break after Evann Guessand’s scrappy finish was cancelled out by a Flavius Daniliuc volley.
Youri Tielemans turned the tide of the game, entering the fray at half-time and scoring a wonderful winner just seven minutes later.
Villa had to hold on a bit late on as Basel pushed for a leveller, Morgan Rogers unknowingly saving the day by deflecting a header over the bar in stoppage time, but a gutsy European win keeps them in the top eight while giving some of the big-name players a bit of rest during a trying fixture schedule.
An excellent night’s work all round for Unai Emery and his charges.
