UN Security Council on Lebanon: Cyprus, Greece and Other European Countries Call for Protection of Civilians and Deescalation

NEW YORK (ANA-MPA/G. Garantzioti) – The UN Security Council met over developments in Lebanon following a request by France that was supported by Bahrain, Denmark, Greece, Latvia, and the United Kingdom.

Top-level UN officials warned ambassadors of the UN Security Council’s member states that the escalation of violence between Israel and Hezbollah has caused mass displacement, a rise in civilian casualties, and a worsening of the humanitarian crisis in all of Lebanon.

At the Security Council, Greece underlined that the continuing escalation in Lebanon pose great threats to civilians and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). “Lebanon is a victim of a war it did not choose,” Greece said, condemning Hezbollah’s attacks against Israel and noting that the organization “must be immediately disarmed.”
