CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Wally, a ten-year-old American alligator and an unofficial mascot of the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), has found a new home on campus. The beloved reptile has moved to an upgraded enclosure in the McCollum Science Hall, where he can enjoy more space and updated features.
Fans gathered on Wednesday to witness Wally’s transition from his old habitat, which he had occupied since 2005. Wally’s new environment not only provides him with a better view but also enhances the experience for his many daily visitors.
UNI President Mark Nook explained the motivation behind the move.
“It was really once the funding came in right, so we made some funds available to faculty across the campus for special projects that would be used in the classroom or in ways to engage the public, and this is one that came in from the biology department,” Nook said. “Wally was really outgrowing the facility that he was in.”
Nook further described how the new habitat benefits not only Wally but also students interested in veterinary medicine and wildlife care. The biology department’s initiative reflects a commitment to educational enrichment and public engagement at UNI.
