Victor Wembanyama Interested in Joining NBA Dunk Contest

On Saturday, the San Antonio Spurs took a 139-122 win over the Sacramento Kings. It was San Antonio’s eighth consecutive victory, maintaining its second position in the Western Conference standings.

Spurs center Victor Wembanyama totaled 28 points, 15 rebounds, six assists, and four blocks over 28 minutes. His performance included numerous highlight-worthy dunks, including a two-handed windmill during the final quarter.

Following the game, Wembanyama expressed interest in participating in a future edition of the NBA’s annual Slam Dunk Contest. “I’ll be in the dunk contest one day,” said Wembanyama.

The State of the Slam Dunk Contest

The Slam Dunk Contest has featured the majority of its participation from G League players and young talent. G League veteran Mac McClung captured three consecutive dunk titles from 2023 to 2025, but opted not to participate in this year’s contest.

The participants for the most recent edition were Orlando Magic rookie Jase Richardson, Los Angeles Lakers center Jaxson Hayes, San Antonio Spurs rookie Carter Bryant, and Miami Heat sophomore Keshad Johnson. Johnson defeated Bryant in the final round of the event.

The last All-Star selection to compete in the Slam Dunk Contest was Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown in 2024. This has been the only occurrence of All-Star participation in over eight years.

Wembanyama would be an intriguing addition to the Slam Dunk Contest, as he is known for both his height and agility on the court. The seven-foot-four center has quickly established himself as one of the NBA’s top defenders, leading the league in blocks for two consecutive seasons.

This season, Wembanyama is averaging 24.2 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks over 41 games. He is ranked fifth on the most recent edition of the NBA’s MVP Ladder.

At 22 years old, Wembanyama is expected to be a serious dunk contest candidate for the foreseeable future. The 2027 Slam Dunk Contest is scheduled to take place in Phoenix, Arizona.
