Victory! New York Fashion Week Goes Fur-Free In Historic Move For Animal Welfare

Victory! New York Fashion Week Goes Fur-Free In Historic Move For Animal Welfare | World Animal News

In a landmark move for the fashion industry, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) announced that New York Fashion Week (NYFW) will officially go fur-free. The organization confirmed last week that it will no longer promote or permit animal fur at any Official NYFW Schedule events beginning September 2026.

The CFDA, which owns and organizes NYFW’s Fashion Calendar, stated that animal fur will no longer appear on its schedule, website, or social media platforms. This announcement comes after years of engagement with Humane World for Animals and Collective Fashion Justice, two groups that have been instrumental in pushing the industry toward more ethical, sustainable materials.

The new policy bans fur from animals killed specifically for their pelts, including mink, foxes, rabbits, karakul lambs, chinchillas, coyotes, and raccoon dogs. Only fur obtained by Indigenous communities through traditional subsistence practices is exempt under the guidelines. To ensure a smooth transition, the CFDA will provide designers with support, educational materials, and access to a library of innovative fur-free alternatives.

London Fashion Week made the fur-free shift in 2023, and Copenhagen, Berlin, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Helsinki, and Melbourne fashion weeks have all moved away from fur. Major media outlets such as Condé Nast, the publisher of Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Glamour, recently banned fur from their editorial content and advertising, following the lead of ELLE and InStyle.

The movement is gaining undeniable momentum. Just last week, WAN reported that Poland is ending fur farming, marking the collapse of yet another major player in a notoriously cruel industry. More people are waking up to the dark reality behind fur: animals confined in wire cages, denied everything natural to them, and killed violently for vanity and fashion.

As awareness grows, more fashion houses, magazines, and now NYFW are choosing ethics over exploitation. The message is clear: the future of fashion is undeniably cruelty-free.

World Animal News and Peace 4 Animals remain committed to ending the cruelty behind fashion once and for all. No animal should ever have to suffer for vanity. Let’s unite and #MakeCompassionTheFashion!
