Vision Beyond Sight: Big Loso’s Journey of Purpose and Perseverance

“Life’s too short to dwell on what holds you back. Every day is a fresh opportunity to move forward.” Those words from Carlos Tolliver, known to many as Big Loso, are more than just a quote—they are a lived reality. The Halifax, Canada–based music artist and internet personality has turned unimaginable adversity into purpose, proving that resilience can reshape even the most devastating circumstances.

Big Loso began rapping nearly eight years ago, but his journey took a life-altering turn just a few years in. After being shot in the face, he lost his eyesight—a moment that could have ended everything. Instead, it became the beginning of something greater. Rather than allowing tragedy to define him, he chose to redefine himself through music. What emerged is not just an artist, but a voice of perseverance, determination, and authenticity.

His story resonated deeply with me on a personal level. Having lost my mother, who was blind due to glaucoma, I felt an immediate connection to Big Loso’s experience. There was something powerful in his ability to not only continue, but to thrive creatively despite losing his sight. That connection led me to sit down with him and explore the heart behind his artistry.

When asked about his sound and artistic identity, Big Loso spoke with clarity and confidence. “My sound and craft comes from always loving music,” he shared. “But I knew you always need your own sound—and I figured mine out.” That sense of individuality is evident in his work. In an industry often driven by trends, he stands firm in his commitment to originality, carving out a lane that is uniquely his.

His latest project reflects both his roots and his intentions. “I decided I wanted to start doing a down home sauce EP,” he explained. “Just to show love to my people where I’m from and connect with those that are passionate about music like I am.” It’s a project grounded in authenticity and community—two elements that clearly matter deeply to him.

Inside the studio, Big Loso approaches his craft with focus and purpose. “When I’m in the booth, I always try to do better than my previous track,” he said. “Usually me and my engineer will figure out the concept, but I already have bars to lay down to give us a start.” That drive for constant improvement fuels his growth as an artist and keeps his sound evolving without losing its core identity.

When it comes to influence, his answer is simple but telling. “I’m really influenced by artists that are passionate about music,” he said. “I don’t go in the booth just to make music—this is my passion.” That passion translates into every lyric, every performance, and every project he releases.

More than anything, Big Loso is committed to staying true to himself. “I find it easy to stay authentic to my craft,” he shared. “I was never a follower—I was always taught to be a leader. I don’t follow trends. I keep my own wave going.” In a world where conformity often overshadows creativity, his mindset is both refreshing and necessary.

Big Loso’s journey is a testament to the power of purpose. He is not defined by what happened to him, but by what he chose to do after. Through music, he has found not only a voice, but a mission—to inspire, to connect, and to remind others that even in the darkest moments, there is still light to be found.
