Walmart will continue selling Macs after proving market for MacBook Neo

Walmart is staying in the business of selling Macs, with the retailer officially selling the $599 MacBook Neo.

That’s no surprise since Apple basically used Walmart as the proving ground for a lower-cost Mac laptop without the fastest processor.

Two years ago, Walmart started selling Macs for the first time with the M1 MacBook Air.

At the time, Apple had just introduced the M3 MacBook Air and stopped selling the M1 MacBook Air after originally keeping it around alongside the pricier, redesigned M2 MacBook Air.

Walmart initially priced the M1 MacBook Air at $699 before dropping to $649 and regularly being discounted to $599. In recent weeks, inventory has almost entirely dried up, although the retailer seems to keep finding one $599 M1 MacBook Air unit to sell.

Looking ahead, Walmart has already listed the new MacBook Neo for pre-order ahead of next week’s release.

This time around, Walmart’s stock doesn’t just come with a choice of color. Walmart customers shopping for MacBook Neo can also choose between the base 256GB model for $599 and the 512GB model that adds Touch ID for $699.

Notably, Walmart is only staying in the well-below-$1000 laptop space. Apple’s other new Macs, including the $1099 M5 MacBook Air, are not being sold by Walmart. You can still find an assortment of refurbished Macs on Walmart’s website, but those are from other resellers that use the retailer’s website as a marketplace.

Apple’s new MacBook Neo is available for pre-order starting today. It arrives in stores in one week on March 11.
