76ers vs. Mavericks: The matchup

The 76ers enter January in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with a 17-14 overall record that includes a solid 8-6 mark away from home. That road record took a hit on Philly’s current five-game swing with back-to-back losses to the Chicago Bulls (109-102) and Oklahoma City Thunder (129-104) before rallying for a 139-136 overtime win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night. VJ Edgecombe hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left in OT as part of a 25-point night, and stars Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey both carried the offense with 34 points apiece.

While the Mavericks search for consistency in a season that has looked like a rebuild from the start, they have also had bright shining moments that include wins over the Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets (twice). In particular, Dallas has struggled on the road to a 3-12 record while proving to be a much tougher out on its home floor, where a 9-9 mark includes a run of five consecutive victories. The Mavs enter Thursday on a three-game losing streak, all on the road, but play their next two at American Airlines Center against the 76ers and Rockets.
