What began as a spontaneous backstage conversation about creative visions quickly evolved into an impromptu studio session, where Angèle and Justice joined forces to resurrect one of her discarded demos.
When Angèle announced she’d recorded new music with the iconic Justice duo, she used the phrase “pété le crâne,” a French expression that means something is mind-blowing. It’s now clear what she was talking about, and she’s not wrong.
The chart-topping singer-songwriter, who has established herself as one of Europe’s most commercially successful francophone artists, released her new single ‘What You Want’ today. She sings in both English and French in the sultry electroclash track, which features Justice’s vintage production and arrives alongside a smoldering video created by Marine Brutti, Jonathan Debrouwer and Arthur Harel of (LA)HORDE, who have directed the Ballet National de Marseille since 2019.
The pairing marks an unexpected union between Angèle’s confessional songwriting and Justice’s gritty, driving sound.
“Spending a bit of time with Angèle confirmed the intuition we had about her: she’s an excellent musician and producer,” Justice said in a statement. “Making ‘What You Want’ with her felt as easy as it was natural. Although her music is different from ours, the track called for something sensual and brutal that we instinctively connected with, without compromise.”
The track’s origins can be traced to a serendipitous post-show meeting and a spontaneous invite to Angèle’s studio, where Justice breathed new life into a track she had previously cast aside.
“I thought Justice could bring the electro-club expertise — and the tension — that were missing from that first version,” Angèle said. “After we met, I sent them the demo, and they came back with this version that I found absolutely brilliant. They understood everything! They brought a power to the track that the intention and balance had been missing. Bringing our worlds together without losing our identities — that’s the greatest success of this song.”
‘What You Want’ is Justice’s first original music since 2024’s sublime Hyperdrama, their first album in eight years, which yielded a Grammy win in the category of Best Dance/Electronic Recording for the Tame Impala collaboration ‘Neverender.’
That year also saw Angèle perform at the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, where Kavinsky welcomed her onstage for a performance of his seminal 2010 song ‘Nightcall’ alongside French pop-rock band Phoenix. The track broke a Shazam record when more people used the app to discover a song than in any single minute before, an Apple representative told EDM.com at the time.
