Watching Your Wallet: Spring cleaning with your finances

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Budding blooms, warmer days and plenty of sunshine may have you thinking about the season synonymous with renewal or tidying up.

Financial experts say spring cleaning isn’t exclusive to your home.

“Just like any other type of Spring cleaning in your home, clutter in your finances creates stress that you feel like you have a weight on you, and it’s a wonderful opportunity to make changes,” says Beyond Finance Chief Financial Wellness Advisor, Dr. Erika Rasure.

Dr. Rasure says you should start by knowing where you stand financially.

“Look especially hard at the things you’ve been putting off,” she said. “Look at where your money might be leaking. Are you spending $800 a month on DoorDash? Have you not set up an emergency fund strategy?

Once you fix the leaks, work on other aspects of your financial house.

“Pick one debt and just start paying it off,” Dr. Rasure said. “It’s just like the idea of picking a junk drawer and cleaning that one first. Do it a little bit at a time.”

Maybe it isn’t debt you want to tackle, but a financial goal you want to reach.

Dr. Rasure says taking control of your finances is a form of self-care.

“When your money is organized, it starts working for you,” she said. “When you don’t feel organized, it creates that background anxiety.”

While no two people or families have the same financial picture, we all have to start somewhere.

This financial spring cleaning is a way to focus on that.
