Wells and Coward out for the season – The Daily Evergreen

With the NBA season dwindling down, the former Cougs have had an up and down season. Here’s a recap of what they have been up to as of late.

Cedric Coward — The standout rookie was dealing with a right knee injury that sidelined him for a few weeks. But he did come back and went on a scoring streak, scoring more than 10 points in nine of his last 12 games. While his knee injury is healed, Coward did come down with a back injury. With the Grizzlies tanking, there will be no rush to bring him back before the season ends.

Klay Thompson — This season has been a struggle for both the Mavericks and Thompson. Averaging just under 12 points and 38.6% shooting from deep. When he signed with the Mavericks they were coming off a Finals run that was supposed to be retooled with the addition of Thompson, to get back to the Finals. However, it has been quite the opposite. In a loss to the Spurs, Thompson was heard saying to the Spurs bench, “It doesn’t matter. We are tanking.”

Mouhamed Gueye — It has been a quiet season for Gueye. Aside from February, he has not put up many numbers. He has nearly the same amount of zero point outings as games he has scored five or fewer points. With the Hawks trading for Johnathan Kuminga, Gueye’s role has decreased and decreased. He is currently playing eight to 15 minutes per game.

Jaylen Wells — In what was supposed to be a bounce back year for Wells, it ended up being quite the opposite. Shooting slumps and injuries plagued Wells’ year. In his last four of six games he shot more than 40% from three, and right as he was getting his groove back, he sustained a toe injury. Wells will look to bounce back next season, with a hectic offseason awaiting the Grizzlies and their roster construction.

Overall, the last month has been inconsistent from all the Cougs. Coward has been a bright spot all season. However, he is alone in that regard, as shake-ups could be looming in the offseason for Thompson and Gueye.
