The William Floyd Middle School Animal Science Club, under the leadership of Kyle Maurelli, recently celebrated the publication of their new book Seal the Deal: Floyd’s Comeback Story, recounting the adventures of “Floyd,” a seal they “adopted” through the New York Marine Rescue Center (NYMRC) and followed from rescue to rehabilitation to release! Students authored and illustrated this book, which was printed by Canon, after Floyd’s release last May!

Representatives from Canon and the NYMRC recently attended a meeting of the Animal Science Club to celebrate the students’ hard work and unveil the newly-published book. NYMRC representative Sophia Koshansky started the meeting by recapping Floyd’s journey and providing an update on his whereabouts using the tracker that was attached to him upon his release. Floyd was last seen off the coast of Baffin Island in Canada within the Arctic Circle!

Then, Canon representative Kate McFadden congratulated the students on their efforts and presented certificates to all club members who had worked on the project. Lastly, club members received a free copy of the book to take home with them! Students were so excited to see the final product and began to read the book as soon as they got their hands on a copy, with some of the authors and illustrators even signing the pages they had worked on!

The book is now available for purchase, with all proceeds going toward the NYMRC so that they can continue to rescue and rehabilitate seals like Floyd.

This project was a collaboration between the New York Marine Rescue Center (NYMRC) in Riverhead, Canon, who bound and printed the book, and the William Floyd Middle School Animal Science Club.

Congratulations to the WFMS Animal Science Club on a job well done and special thanks to the NYMRC and Canon for helping make this unique educational experience possible!
