Red Dirt music fans are filling Stillwater as one of Oklahoma’s largest concert events returns, bringing new energy to the city.
Author and journalist Josh Crutchmer said the atmosphere leading up to the show has been “electric,” with crowds gathering along the Strip and in businesses near the Oklahoma State University campus.
Doors are set to open just hours before showtime, with thousands expected to attend.
A celebration of Red Dirt music
This year’s concert follows a major reunion performance in 2025, but Crutchmer said the focus has shifted.
Instead of centering on a single comeback, the 2026 event highlights the broader Red Dirt movement and its continued rise in popularity.
Bands like the Turnpike Troubadours are “having a moment,” while Cross Canadian Ragweed remain a cornerstone of the genre.
Rising artist Wyatt Flores is also drawing attention, with this performance marking a major hometown moment.
Crutchmer said the lineup reflects how far the Red Dirt scene has come, evolving from a niche genre into a major draw attracting fans from across the region.
Part of the excitement surrounding the concert comes from the unknown.
Last year’s event included a surprise album release from the Turnpike Troubadours, and Crutchmer said fans are expecting similar moments this time around.
He said both established acts and newer performers could have unexpected elements planned for the show.
New book offers behind-the-scenes look
Alongside the concert, Crutchmer is promoting his latest book, Almost Almost Famous, which explores the stories behind major moments in Red Dirt and country music.
The book includes interviews with artists such as Robert Earl Keen and features one of the final interviews with Todd Snider.
Crutchmer said the project draws on more than two decades of experience covering the genre and aims to preserve the history of Oklahoma’s music roots.
Crutchmer said he is already working on another project tied to this year’s concert, a full-color journal-style book documenting the event.
The project, titled Red Dirt’s Return, is expected to recap the performances and atmosphere, similar to commemorative books created after major sporting events.
