There was a time when I devoured zombie movies – obsessively, unapologetically, and often late into the night. From blood-soaked survival thrillers to surprisingly emotional tales of humanity at its breaking point, I have seen them all: the fast runners, the slow shamblers, the virus outbreaks, the apocalyptic road trips. And, often wondered – ‘could I survive that?’ I would often laugh at the thought and the answer. But, with time, my love for the genre withered away. However, a handful of stories still refuse to leave my mind, which includes the heart-warming Warm Bodies, which isn’t your typical zombie movie. As a former zombie-movie addict, the following are my all-time favourites – the ones that terrified me, moved me, and reminded me why this genre is far more than just gore and growls.
What to watch: 7 zombie movies and series I can’t stop rewatching, even after years of obsession
1. Train to Busan – YouTube
Seok-woo (Gong Yoo), a cynical and workaholic fund manager, is taking his young, neglected daughter Su-an to Busan to visit her mother for her birthday. Their journey on the high-speed KTX train is interrupted when a convulsing woman boards at the last second, sparking a viral outbreak that turns the passengers into rabid, ultra-fast predators. As the train hurtles through a collapsing South Korea, a small group of survivors must fight their way through infected carriages to reach the only remaining safe zone: Busan. This isn’t just a zombie movie; it’s an emotional rollercoaster on a speeding train. Beneath the chaos and bone-crunching action lies a deeply emotional story about parenthood, redemption, and selflessness. The zombies are terrifying – fast, aggressive, relentless. But it’s the human choices that hit hardest.
