At first glance, it looks like a 3D-knitted rectangle, with straight lines and sharp corners. If it were not split down the middle, one might mistake it for a scarf. The object, designed by the Japanese brand Issey Miyake and unveiled on November 11, is in fact an “iPhone Pocket.” Starting on November 14, it will go on sale in a limited edition, both online and in select Apple stores across eight countries. In France, this high-end accessory – €159.95 for the short version, €249.95 for the long version – called the iPhone Pocket will be displayed on a metal counter at the Apple Store at the Marché Saint-Germain in Paris.
With smartwatches featuring Hermès straps and a Jacquemus runway show filmed on an iPhone, the Cupertino-based multinational corporation has not shied away from flirtations with fashion and luxury. But this pocket was developed in collaboration with Issey Miyake, also marking the launch of its latest iteration, the iPhone 17 – the first time in its history that Apple has created a textile piece in proper form. “Our team is inspired by many design disciplines, including fashion,” said British designer Molly Anderson, vice president of industrial design at the American tech giant, in an email. This time, that inspiration is even clearer than with previous in-house accessories, such as the fully woven polyester hard cases Apple introduced in August.
