For decades, the hardwood of the NBA was a space defined exclusively by men, from the players in the paint to the officials blowing the whistles. That changed forever on Oct. 31, 1997, when a 33-year-old official from California stepped onto the court in Vancouver. Violet Palmer made history that night as the first woman to officiate an NBA regular-season game, forever altering the landscape of professional basketball.
The milestone occurred during a matchup between the Dallas Mavericks and the team then known as the Vancouver Grizzlies. Despite the magnitude of the moment, the atmosphere remained focused on the game itself. When Palmer was announced before tip-off, there was little reaction from the crowd, a sign of the professionalism she brought to the floor. For Palmer, the night culminated years of preparation and a relentless drive to succeed at the highest level.
“This is a dream come true, but it’s come about by a lot of hard work,” Palmer said. Her arrival was celebrated by league executives, including then-NBA vice president Rod Thorn, who attended the game to witness the breakthrough. Thorn noted that the evening would be remembered decades later as the moment that opened the door for future generations of officials.
Before reaching the NBA, Palmer was already one of basketball’s most decorated officials. She had officiated the women’s Final Four, WNBA games, and the NBA Summer League. While she had reached the pinnacle of women’s basketball as the No. 3-ranked referee in the world, she sought a new challenge. She later told USA Today that her personality compelled her to leap to the NBA when the opportunity arose.
Her trailblazing career extended beyond her 1997 debut. Palmer became the first woman to referee an NBA playoff game and, in 2014, became the first openly gay referee in the league. Her athletic foundation was built long before she donned the gray officiating shirt; Palmer was a standout point guard at Compton High School and later at Cal Poly Pomona, where she led her team to back-to-back Division II national championships in 1985 and 1986.
Palmer officiated 919 NBA games over nearly two decades before retiring in 2016 due to a knee injury. Her legacy continues to be felt in every game where women now regularly command the sidelines of the NBA.
