Yahoo Finance goes ‘undercover’ at McDonald’s and works a shift

00:00 Josh

You recently worked a shift at a McDonald’s in New York City. Walk us through that that experience. What surprised you about that?

00:04 Speaker A

Yeah, well, you’re hearing that right. I worked a shift because I found out that 1 in 8 Americans actually have worked at McDonald’s and I never did. So, thanks to the Handel family, my dream came true. I was able to work a quick shift at the Times Square McDonald’s location. Take a look at this.

00:20 Speaker A

First day, one day only as a crew member at McDonald’s Times Square. Let’s go.

00:25 Speaker B

I would like you to make the big Arch.

00:26 Speaker A

is that

00:27 Speaker C

Let’s start out with something easier. It’s it’s a little more complex than the Big Mac.

00:31 Speaker A

Listen, there’s nothing more classic than the Big Mac.

00:33 Speaker C

100%.

00:36 Speaker A

And how fast do I need to make that?

00:43 Speaker A

All right, we got our two patties. Put this back in? Yes. Okay. All right. One patty on the bottom. And you just prepared your first Big Mac. Yes. Yes, I did it.

00:53 Speaker A

All right now, Josh, I don’t want to brag here, but I did get to keep the visor and the Handel family did offer me a job after I did leave that location. I mean, I did pretty well.

01:03 Josh

Yeah, it’s good. Well, it’s good to have options.

01:04 Speaker A

I have the official name tag. They offered me a official job. I mean, I got to make a drink, I got to make the burger, I got to make the fries. I got to make a McFlurry. That was a dream come true, but mostly when I

01:17 Josh

So, so delicious.

01:17 Speaker A

It was so good. Oreo McFlurry cannot be beat.

01:20 Josh

The best. There’s almost always an Oreo McFlurry in a Lipton freezer.

01:23 Speaker A

Uh.

01:24 Josh

Really almost an almost every day of the week, twice on Sunday. What was, was there a part of that job that like a tough part of that job? And think, you know what, I bet customers and even investors don’t appreciate this.

01:42 Speaker A

Yeah, I will say the attention to detail. And I spoke to the three franchise operators. It’s a family-owned franchise. They own about 31 locations around the Tri-state area. Shout out to Mark, Paul and Lauren for kindly welcoming me in. But really the attention to detail with just how much goes into every single meal and the accuracy that you need to do. It’s an ounce and a half of lettuce. It’s the sauce perfectly in the middle, the pickles perfectly aligned. Also, the waterfall technique when you when you do the fries and when you toss the fries with the salt. Also, did you know that there’s a no salt option for fries as well? No idea. No idea.

02:18 Josh

I have no idea.

02:20 Josh

I don’t know why you would want that because the salt is perfect. Don’t try to mess with perfection. It’s perfect as it is.

02:23 Speaker A

The fries, the salt really makes them. I agree. I agree. But they do keep that to the side.

02:30 Josh

When you saw customers coming in, back to our earlier conversation about how folks who you maybe felt some stress right now. I’m just curious. Did you see were, did you feel like people were hunting for value or no, they were like loading up, load up the tray, who cares, go for it.

02:45 Speaker A

So Josh, keep in mind, it was at the Times Square location. So it was a lot of tourists coming in. But what I was amazed about was that this was a location that has a lot of kiosks out in the front. And what Mark was talking about is that this is sort of an opportunity for young people, for everyday people, everyday Americans to really understand base levels of a digital business right now. And that’s something that I learned very quickly. The amount of orders that this location gets ahead of time and the line, Josh, my heart was racing. I was nervous. It was a little stressful there. And what Lauren was saying was that she learned that this is really, you learn exactly how to run a business very, very fast because there’s lots of orders coming in. You’re on a time limit, but also you stick to your job. There’s a person making fries, a person ordering Big Mac, a person making McChickens, person doing the drinks. So you stick to your job there, but really you learn a whole lot about people very quickly.

03:39 Josh

What did you order? Did you order when you were there? Did you get an ash?

03:41 Speaker A

So I I did. I I made, I made my own meal. This is like my dream McDonald’s meal. A Big Mac, a Hi-C, because I actually, I’m not a big soda fan. So I love the Hi-C. Classic, right? French fries and the Ore- Oreo McFlurry.

03:47 Josh

Hi-C’s great. Nothing wrong with Hi-C. Yeah. Yeah, Hi-C with the McDonald’s, for some reason, the grease, the salt, the sugar, I’m not sure.

03:57 Speaker A

It’s so… I’m actually craving it right now. I’m not gonna lie.

04:00 Josh

I’m getting hungry just talking.
