YOU, ME & TUSCANY | FACES OF DEATH movie openings

You, Me & Tuscany, produced by Will Packer, starring Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page and shot on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, from Universal.

– This is a fair opening for an original romantic comedy. Pending final figures on Monday, the weekend figure is just below average for the genre. Critics’ reviews are good-not-great, but rom coms are crowd-pleasers and the audience score is excellent (an A- CinemaScore).

– The movie was produced by Will Packer, one of the most prolific and successful Black American producers of all time (along with Tyler Perry and Spike Lee), with a particular talent for comedy.

  • His movies include Ride Along $154m worldwide, Ride Along 2 $125m, Think Like A Man $96m, About Last Night $50m, Almost Christmas $43m, Girls Trip $141m, Night School $103m, and What Men Want $72m — extremely impressive.

    • Last week, Universal announced the development of Ride Along 3 with the original director Tim Story, actors Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, and of course Will Packer.

Faces of Death, based on the cult 1978 shockumentary, from IFC.

– This is a small opening for an indie horror film, on a limited number of screens. The figures are below average for these movies. Critics’ reviews are good-not-great, and the audience score is flat (a C CinemaScore) — common for hard-to-watch material like this.

  • The story is based on a cult 1978 “mondo” horror pic — a pseudo-documentary, or “shockumentary.” It shows the ghastly side of death, with a mix of real and reenacted graphic footage that’s presented as if it’s all real, but it’s not. The movie was made for $450,000 and earned $35 million at the BO.

    • In the new film, a young content moderator stumbles on a series of violent videos that appear to re-enact death scenes from the infamous 1978 movie, and she has to determine whether the material is fake or unfolding in real time.

– Last weekend was the first without a new horror release, following 14 consecutive weeks that had at least one new horror title.

– The big titles that opened over the last month are holding extremely well, led by Super Mario 2, with around $310 million after just 2 weekends, and Project Hail Mary with around $260m after 4 weekends.

  • So far, April is running -6% below the pre-pandemic average (the average of April 2019, 2018 and 2017), and we expect it to continue like that, with The Mummy next weekend, and Michael the weekend after that.

    • This is a better performance than last month, which was a big improvement over March 2025, but March 2025 was weak and even with the rebound, last month finished -29% below the pre-pandemic average.

      • We want to see the BO back at pre-pandemic levels, and April should come close. Overall, the current trend at the box office is positive, with two strong titles on deck.

GOAT [Greatest of All Time], an animation sports story, currently with $187 million worldwide and a few more territories to go, on an est. production budget of $85 million, from Sony Pictures Animation.
